A highlight of the day was seeing a mob of kangaroos and Marg showed us a “secret” on how to get up and personal with them…

Details

After being picked up from your city hotel or designated central pick up point, our first stop on our Touch of real Australia Tour is Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, about 45 minutes’ drive from the city centre. On the way we travel past the popular local picnic place that locals refer to as ‘The Cotter’ and see the dam that is Canberra’s main water supply. Keep your eye open for father emu and his emu chicks during spring.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, nestled within the Tidbinbilla Valley, is the perfect place to encounter Australian birds and animals including emus, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, parrots, waterbirds and often, platypus. Driving through the reserve you will be able to observe animals in their natural habitat. You will be escorted through The Sanctuary, a large wetlands eco system, a refuge for a diverse range of native animals. In the Eucalypt Forest you will see koalas, and possibly spot potoroos and wallabies often grazing nearby.

We go on to visit the Canberra Deep Space Communication Centre* one of NASA’s three working space centres in the world. NASA’s Deep Space Network is in constant communication with spacecraft in outer space and you will see real time communication between antenna and spacecraft.

From the Tidbinbilla Valley, we travel to Gold Creek Station on the western outskirts of the city, enjoying rural scenery on the 45 minute drive. Here you will laugh at the antics of the working dogs, Digger and Davo, as they follow orders to round up the sheep and bring them to you. Then off to the shearing shed to watch the sheep shearing. This is an interactive experience and you may even get to hold a sheep!

Craig shearing

After a typical Australian barbecue lunch we head to Canberra Reptile Centre (or you can choose from Cockington Green Gardens or Canberra Walk in Aviary listed below**). This family-owned centre has the largest display of Australian snakes and reptiles, in the region. Experience, see, and touch some friendly Australian reptiles. Meet the popular salt-water crocodile. Get a close-up view of some iconic Australian birds, delightful marsupials, frogs and much more. (This is a safe (and fun) environment.)

After visiting the Canberra Reptile Centre, we will head back to your hotel or designated central pick up point. This tour is approximately 8–9 hours.

Please note: Departure time will vary according to the time of year. The above itinerary is based on a 7.30am start and return at approximately 4 to 4.30pm.

All inclusive 2 person private tour package $998. Tour can accommodate up to 11 guests at an extra $95 each additional adult guest, $50 each additional child
